2013 Honorary Grand Marshal Nick Clooney

This year the parade is proud to announce our Honorary Grand Marshal is Nick Clooney. For decades Nick was the trustworthy face of the news on WKRC-TV.  Nick is now known internationally for his work as a journalist, author, activist and humanitarian.   Nick and his singing sisters Rosemary and Betty were the children of parents who were both of Irish descent.  He has made no secret over the years of his proud Irish roots.  Though he has traveled the world, Nick and his wife Nina have always called the Greater Cincinnati area home.  Nick and Nina are the proud parents of children are Ada, a writer and mother.  Nick often describes her two children as the “World’s Greatest Grandchildren.”  They are also parents to Oscar winning actor, director and producer, George Clooney.

Nick and George recently made the critically acclaimed documentary, Journey to Darfur, which has been shown internationally and reveals the horrors of the genocide that has taken place in Darfur.   The film was released on DVD with the proceeds from its sale being donated to the International Rescue Committee to help the people of Darfur.

Nick is the winner of numerous regional and national Emmy Awards for his work as a journalist.  He has received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Northern Kentucky University, has taught at American University in Washington, D.C. and has been inducted into the Cincinnati Journalism Hall of Fame. In 2012 the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber named Nick Clooney one of the greatest living Cincinnatians.  The Cincinnati St. Patrick’s Parade is proud to have Nick Clooney in this year’s parade!

Willie T. O’Neill 1939 – 2012

First thing you noticed about Willie was his smile…he was always smiling, and of course his gentlemanly demeanor. He had a way of calming tempers in an argument; Willie always had the “cool” head; always knew the right thing to say. He had a way of gaining consensus.

Will held several elected offices within St. Patrick’s Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians such as President and Vice President, but one of his favorite achievements was being the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick Parade in 1987. He LOVED the parade. Dressed in his traditional Irish Walker with a suit, tie, and sash, he took great pleasure in riding through the parade in a bright green convertible (for which he was eternally thankful).

Willie’s unassuming manner hid his achievements, such a being a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, and a lifetime member of the unit’s color guard. He still holds the record of most tackles in a game for his beloved Elder Panthers (class of 1956). These are accomplishments you had to learn from others because Will wasn’t one to boast.

Willie will be greatly missed as a Hibernian brother, a leader, and a friend.
